Is it time to review parking fines????

Parking commuters swoop - Is it time to review the parking fines????

Residents of Freemans Bay and Ponsonby in Auckland are struggling with commuters who circle waiting for residents to drop their children off at school and nab their car parks, then put on their running shoes and jog to work.  They may get a $12 parking fine, but that is a good trade off when parking in Auckland can cost more than $12.  Is it time to review the level of parking fines so they become a deterrent?

  1. Hi Kevin
I am amazed the penalty value is so low. I would expect it to be in the order of $60 - $80 at least if it were to match the rest of the Aus/NZ rates.

  2. To a certain degree this is why infringements for WOF and Rego are populardas they may actually pay for the cost of delivery.

  4. Pretty sure that no amount of money (fines) will totally solve the problem, People will almost always make the decision to park in a time restricted area regardless of the penalty in the belief that they will be "back on time" to shift their vehicle. I think it's the enforcement operation that lets the system down. If enforcement is not consistent then the system will fail. Best way to deal with this is towing, 3 or 4 cars towed would make people think twice about doing it again + word of mouth travels fast... worked for me.
